The Chele Chele Villa – Historical Significance

Near Kilimanjaro International Airport, on the forested slopes of Mount Meru, there is a Villa. But not an ordinary villa. The Chele Chele has an enormous historical significance.

Built by renowned German Architect Ernst May, specifically for captain Murray, the Villa is a rare pearl. The construction occurred in 1936, thus the Villa boasts a history spanning nearly a century.

Originally designed in English country style, it changed owners several times. Careful restoration helped maintaining the Chele Chele’s irresistible charm. Especially with the genuine African artifacts, the Villa certainly tells its story!

Nowadays The Chele Chele certainly takes the important place in the tourism of East Africa. Visited by the guests from all over the world, it surely promises an unparalleled adventure!

The exquisite Chele Chele Villa was meticulously crafted in the renowned Bauhaus style by the esteemed German architect Ernst May specifically for Captain Murray. Ernst May served as an urban planner for the cities of Frankfurt, Stuttgart, and Berlin in Germany. As a matter of fact, he had a significant impact on the urban cityscapes of German city life.

Furthermore his architectural designs had a profound influence on many major East African cities.

The construction of the Villa was finalized in October of 1936.

The construction took place on a vast coffee plantation spanning more than 400 acres, solely dedicated to growing Arabica coffee. In addition, coffee production on the estate continued until the beginning of the 1970’s.

The Chele Chele Villa – Today

Villa has had a change in ownership since that time. Albeit it had many renovations, the Villa has continued to maintain the original state of a graceful English country style.

During its near century-long existence, the Chele Chele Villa showcases numerous distinctive elements and African artifacts that have been gathered over time.
